The Game That Taught Me More Than Baseball

"Growing up, my dad coached all our baseball teams in the Ramsey Youth Athletic Association—now the Anoka Ramsey Athletic Association, one of our valued clients at Sportsline Photography. We were a solid team, pulling off feats like turning double plays in second grade. That year, we cruised through the regular season undefeated, feeling on top of the world.

Heading into the playoffs, our first game was against the league’s underdog, the purple team—a team we’d beaten twice that season. Overconfident and already dreaming of the championship, we overlooked them.

To our shock, we lost.

I’ll never forget the sting of that defeat. I braced for my dad’s disappointment, expecting a lecture or frustration. Instead, he looked at me calmly and said:

“Son, you won’t win every game, and that’s okay. Get back up and keep going.”

Those words stuck with me.

They taught me that failure is part of the journey, no matter how prepared you think you are. It’s about how you respond. We took that lesson to heart, regrouped, and won the next two games to claim the consolation championship. That experience wasn’t just about baseball—it was a life lesson in resilience, one I carry with me today as we capture the joy, grit, and growth of youth sports through our lenses at Sportsline Photography."

"So this photo was taken when I was 4 years old and my family lived in Alabama at the time. According to my family I was very competitive and loved playing soccer. I couldn’t get enough of being apart of a team and having so much fun. One day I just stopped right in the middle of the game and walked right past the coach and took a seat on the bench. My family thought I could have been hurt so they rushed over to see what was wrong. Turns out I was just tired."

"I played Rec Soccer in my early childhood and ran track in middle school. As a child, these sports taught me perseverance and teamwork along with many other traits that I’ve carried into my adult life. I enjoyed being a part of a team and working towards a goal together.

My favorite sport related memory actually happened recently watching by daughter enter in her first karate tournament. There was a wave of emotions surrounding this tournament. At first, she was terrified to do it and was worried she wouldn’t do well. Her dad and I told her it didn’t matter how well she did but wanted her to do her best. We knew that if she practiced and was ready mentally, she would be proud of herself for what she could accomplish. As we got closer to the day, she was getting more and more excited, and we could tell she was ready! She ended up getting a Gold Medal in her round and getting 2nd place to the Grand Champion. It was so awesome to see her grow mentally and physically and overcome her fear of failure."

"My favorite sports memory is taking all the sports pictures in high school. It was my favorite thing to do. If I was at a sporting event I was there taking pictures. I was at almost all the games capturing the action and the student section. Senior year, I was taking pictures on the football field during an important game against our biggest rivals and I got the best picture of the entire student section waving their phone flashlights and the picture went around the school."

"My favorite childhood memories are fishing with my grandpa out at their lake place in central Wisconsin. We would get out on the water before the sunrise and spend hours enjoying the beauty of God's creation and talk about life, family, and church. I played other organized sports when I was growing up, but fishing is what impacted me most and will stay with me for the rest of my life."

"My favorite sports memory is from when I played soccer when I was little. I never liked playing sports but I always had my fun. I was the goalie when I played soccer and I would just sit and play in the grass. There were very few times I actually played the game. My other favorite memory was playing sports with my sister, she always made it fun growing up and being able to play sports with her!"

"I have been involved in sports my whole life, so it's hard to narrow down my favorite memories! My main sports are dance and track. For track, I would say that my favorite memory is going to sections my junior year. The weather was horrible and I was expecting not to score higher than my average. It was pouring rain all day. We were soaked head to toe, through multiple layers and even umbrellas. The sand was a mud pit, and our shoes turned brown. There was nothing we could do in the moment other than persevere and trust that all the training had prepared us. I ended up placing 4th and set a huge personal record, making this meet a big accomplishment. I also have really close bonds with my coaches, and it was so special to see how proud of me they were and be able to share the excitement for my PR. What I thought was a “ruined day” turned out to be such a memorable day for many reasons. This day taught me the importance of being able to go with the flow because sometimes the most exciting times are coming when you least expect it!"

"My favorite memory of youth sports was traveling all over for dance and cheerleading competitions. Spending weekends away with my teammates and family! One competition our dance team was in Rochester Mn, our entire dance program swept the entire competition and took first in each category for the entire competition for the whole weekend. We were in the newspaper for this major accomplishment!"
